Why is the Christian Dior Boston Bag trending again?

The Dior Boston is a model that never truly disappeared. Purses like the Saddle Bag were extremely popular for a while, which caused the Boston Bag to stay more in the background. Over time, people became more interested in simpler and more timeless bags, which eventually led to a major comeback for the Dior Boston Bag.

The print behind Dior’s signature Oblique

The reason why the Dior Boston Bag became so popular is because of the Oblique print. The pattern was designed in 1967 by Marc Bohan and Philippe Guibourgé. This marked an important moment for Dior. Before the Oblique print was introduced, Dior was mainly known for couture, meaning custom-made clothing of the highest quality. The brand wanted to focus more on recognizable branding, which was uncommon at the time. The Oblique print therefore became more than just a design, it became part of Dior’s identity.

Which purses feature the Dior Oblique print?

Why the Dior Boston Bag was designed

The shape of the Dior Boston Bag was designed during the 1960s and 1970s. The bag was inspired by travel bags, at a time when traveling was becoming increasingly accessible and practical.

The Boston Bag was originally created as a functional bag designed for travel. Other well-known travel-inspired bags include the Louis Vuitton Keepall, Gucci Duffle Bag and the Celine Macadam Boston. The purse is structured yet flexible, making it practical for both travel and everyday use.

How did Christian Dior become relevant again?

Dior has been a popular brand for a long time, but where did its rise truly begin? In the 1960s, Christian Dior passed away and new creative directors took over the house. Marc Bohan eventually became the most influential creative director of that period. He had something few others had: a vision for a complete rebranding of Christian Dior.

He also believed strongly in recognizability and consistency. Bohan focused on building a clear brand identity, making Dior recognizable through its visual language across every collection. The brand no longer revolved solely around couture, but increasingly around international luxury fashion.
