Why is Prada so popular again?

Prada is not just a brand that has remained popular. While many luxury brands rely on recognizable status, Prada is about constantly reinventing itself. Under the direction of Miuccia Prada, it has grown into a brand that plays with identity.

The evolution of Prada through the years

1913

Prada was founded by the Prada brothers in Milan. They focused on luxury leather goods and travel bags, aimed at quality and exclusivity for the elite.

1950-70

Luisa Prada, the daughter of Mario Prada, took over the company out of necessity. Mario had preferred not to have a woman in charge, but she ensured that Prada continued to exist.

1978

Miuccia Prada takes over her mother’s role as head designer. She immediately began steering the brand in a completely new direction. Her perspective on fashion is different, shaped by her feminist view and interest in politics. She doesn’t just want to create “beautiful things,” but to tell a story.

1985

For a long time, fashion was all about status, with large logos and classic, recognizable designs. But Miuccia Prada chose a different direction. She introduced black nylon bags at Prada, a material that was originally used for military parachutes. This showed that women do not need to carry traditional bags to feel feminine.

1993

Miuccia launched her own brand with a slightly lower price point and a younger feel. She named it after her nickname: Miu Miu.

1989

The ready-to-wear line was launched. This marked a major shift, as materials like nylon were treated with the same importance as silk and cashmere. From this moment on, Prada grew into one of the world’s leading fashion houses.

Founding of Prada by the Prada brothers

Mario Prada founded the brand Prada together with his brother Martino Prada in Milan. They focused on high-quality leather goods, especially luxury suitcases and travel bags made from exclusive materials.

In 1919, Prada became the official supplier of bags and trunks to the Italian royal family, which allowed the brand to use the royal coat of arms. This recognition played a key role in Prada’s international growth. From that moment on, Prada developed into an important and respected designer brand.

How Miuccia Prada reinvented the Prada brand

Miuccia Prada was born in 1949 in Milan and grew up within the Prada family business, originally founded by her grandfather Mario Prada. She studied political science and was a member of the Communist Party, which shaped a very different perzspective on fashion than most designers. For her, fashion was never just about elegance, but about vision and the way you present ideas to the world.

When she later took over the company, she decided to completely transform Prada. She pushed for innovation by redefining what luxury could represent. In her view, luxury did not have to be visible or traditional, it could also be functional and unexpected. At first, her minimal and “anti-luxury” approach was not widely accepted, as it went against everything people associated with classic luxury. Her vision was misunderstood in the beginning.

Sustainability at Prada with Re-Nylon

In recent years, Prada has been focusing more on sustainability. The brand is taking bigger steps to work in a more environmentally conscious way. One of these steps is the use of Re-Nylon, a recycled material made from reused plastic waste such as fishing nets and ocean plastic.

The growing popularity of vintage Prada also contributes to sustainability. By wearing older designs again, products are used for longer and given a second life.

Rain and moisture

The material is water-resistant, making the bag well protected against rain and moisture.

Wear and tear

The nylon is durable and resistant to scratches and daily use.

Small tears

The material is lightweight yet strong, making the bag less likely to tear.

Dirt

The material is dirt-resistant, helping the bag stay clean easily.
