What you need to know about Gucci serial numbers
Gucci has a long history of handbags and accessories. What makes the brand so valuable is the craftsmanship behind each item. An important detail is the serial number, which helps to better understand a Gucci bag and place it within the right context.
What is a Gucci serial number?
Each Gucci bag usually has a serial number, often referred to as a date code. Unlike some other designer brands, a Gucci serial number does not show the exact year of production. The number functions as an internal identification code that contains information about the model and the production batch.

What does a Gucci serial number look like?
On Gucci bags made after around 1990, the serial number is usually stamped on a rectangular leather label stitched inside the bag, often positioned high against the lining. The label typically shows two lines of numbers.
- The top line refers to the model or style number of the bag. This number usually consists of five to seven digits.
- The bottom line is a supplier or batch code, which may also appear on other Gucci items from the same production run.
The numbers are always stamped into the leather, never printed or glued. On Gucci wallets and small leather goods, the serial number is usually stamped directly into the interior without a separate label.

How Gucci serial numbers looked in the past
Early Gucci bags from the 1950s sometimes had a Brev number, a model code that was not used consistently. In the 1960s, serial numbers appeared irregularly, and in the 1970s they largely disappeared, with often only the Gucci logo visible.

What if you can’t find a serial number?
The absence of a serial number does not mean that a Gucci bag is not authentic. With older vintage items, it can happen that a code was never added, or that it has faded or disappeared due to use and age. This is why the serial number should always be seen as just one part of the bigger picture.
How do you recognize a fake Gucci bag?
Although a Gucci serial number provides information about the model and production, it is not proof of authenticity. Counterfeit bags can also have a serial number. That is why a Gucci bag should always be assessed based on multiple characteristics, such as leather quality, stitching, hardware, logos, and overall finish. In practice, the serial number mainly serves as a consistency check.
Modern Gucci bags sometimes have an authenticity tag, but this is rarely seen on vintage models.
